Chapter Five

Darkness, darkness all around. Robin opened his eyes, yet no light would pour in. All about him was in utter darkness.

Robin’s first thoughts were of her, his dearest Shanna. His heart ached. How will I get along without her? I don’t thing I can. Gloomy thoughts of an empty life void of her presence filled his mind and heart. Dear, dear Shanna.

So lost in his melancholy was the wretched young man that he forgot who he was, how he’d gotten here, where here was. Without Shanna, it all seemed meaningless now.

A deep, thickly-accented voice spoke in a firm tone.

Life is not meaningless. She is not dead, and neither are you, so get up.

Robin knew Max’s voice when he heard it, but Max wasn’t here, was he?

Pushing up into a sitting position, Robin blinked, and the world slowly came into focus. First a dim light, then four wooden walls, and a dirty ceiling.

The rest came in a sudden flash of memory that threatened to push him right back down into the floor again.

The crash, the man in the road—Robin’s heart raced as he tried to make sense of everything that’d happened.

Or was it all a strange dream, a false memory?

The aches and pains in his arms, legs, and torso told that the accident had been all too real. Numerous scrapes and bruises put a tight lid on that stinging testimony.

His eyes now sharply focused, Robin carefully took in his surroundings.

This room was small, almost tiny, not big enough for a room, but just barely too large for a closet. The rusty cot he lay on barely fit between the walls.

An old, brown power cord hung from the ceiling. A dim incandescent bulb sprouted from the end to bathe the room in a cold, uncaring light.

Other than the dust swimming wildly in the stuffy air, there was nothing else in the room.

Robin hung his legs over the side of the cot, sending sharp pains racing up his spine. He tried to stand, but the pain in his back was just too great.

He spent the next several minutes just trying to get his breath and trying to push himself onto his feet. There was no point in trying to go for the door that was just out of reach until he could move beyond it.

After several agonizing minutes, Robin managed to get to his feet and stay there. Leaning heavily on the nearby wall, he twisted, turned, and pulled on the doorknob. His efforts were for naught. The door was either stuck, locked, or both.

Breathing heavily, Robin sat back down on the cot. An instant later, he heard footsteps outside the door. He tried to force himself up, but the pain was too great.

The door clicked and opened with a slow creak that would make the most haunted of houses proud. Yet no ghost entered the tiny room.

A young man, dark hair and darker eyes, smiled at Robin as he stood in the doorway. Dressed in black shoes, slacks, and a dark waistcoat, the young man looked like he’d just stepped right out of the past.
